A Christian crowdfunding site has raised over $300,000 for the Kenosha shooter's legal defense fund

We should really start putting quotation marks around “Christian” when talking about these people.

At least some of his lawyers previously represented Nick Sandmann, so no surprise there.

Well, the dominant strain of American evangelical Christianity to be precise. Where I’m from Christianity is represented by the utterly harmless village vicar preaching to a church half-filled with the elderly, administering weddings and funerals and collecting money for children and the church roof.

The church of England?

The Protestant Church of Germany, actually.

Yeah if he was pointing it at people it is going to be hard to claim defense.

I just skimmed over the thread earlier, but found your PDF and will check it out. Thanks!

His firm is being sued for failing to pay a settlement from abused former workers. There is nothing sleazier for a than refusing to pay settlement. Its not just lying to plaintiffs but the court as well.

The kid is better off with a public defender. At least they are more likely to uphold their duty to defend someone within the bounds of professional ethical responsibilities.

This is one of the reasons I do not attend church anymore. I find it very hard to know so called Christians think like this. Jesus the son of God will deal with his church as he see’s fit, I don’t want to be there when he comes and clean it out. I pray for y’all everynite. I pray he come and cover his own not those that cry wolf.

I thought you might be taking a small issue with how broadly I was painting with the “fascist” brush, because frankly a few years ago, I would have. I would have considered it unfair hyperbole. Now I’m realizing, no, they’re fundamentally fascists. The Republican party is mostly made up of fascists, now.

I’m looking at political surveys, and I’m fucking scared. e.g.

Republicans are feeling like they need to choose between white supremacy and democracy now, and they’re choosing white supremacy.

Most Republicans in a January 2020 survey agreed that “the traditional American way of life is disappearing so fast that we may have to use force to save it.”

Almost half agreed

“a time will come when patriotic Americans have to take the law into their own hands.”

It’s official: we’re having another civil war, and the Kenosha killings were some of the first shots.

I read the complaint. I don’t see points 1 or 2 (that the kid was pointing his gun at people, or that Rosenbaum approached him to stop pointing the gun at people). There’s nothing about what was said as Rosenbaum approached him before the first chase began. Or that McGinnis went into his car.

We read that: Rosenbaum approached Rittenhouse. That Rittenhouse made a “juke” move to avoid Rosenbaum. That Rittenhouse ran away (precipitating the first chase). That Rosenbaum threw something in a plastic bag at Rittenhouse. An apparent gunshot is heard, and Rittenhouse stop and faces the man chasing him. When Rosenbaum was shot, he was attempting to grab the gun.

Rittenhouse attempted to retreat. Rosenbaum attempted to take the rifle. There’s nothing in the charging document stating that Rittenhouse was provoking Rosenbaum, or pointing it at anyone until shortly before Rosenbaum was shot.

It’s not a fait accompli. Let’s not give into despair and give the Bugaloo boys what they want.

Fear genuinely is the mind killer; don’t give in to it.

I dunno - at this point I think it may be; the right have already started in on it. What’s left to be decided is what form it will take. Best case scenario is a big uptick in right-wing terrorism.

At this point I can be sad, frightened or angry. I don’t think I have the energy left to be that angry, though.

sometimes i get pretty down. i take solace that just outside my door, life is pretty normal – even with coronavirus raging – most people are making do, getting through their day, making this work.

and while rhetoric on the right is at fever pitch, most of america isn’t there with them.

if anything, the black lives matter protests give me great hope. people realize things are messed up and that change needs to happen.

the government isn’t in the position to crush that voice, or it would have done it already. all it can do right now is try to pick away at it, and so far that isn’t working. if anything, it’s having the opposite effect. more and more places across the country are standing up.

similar, the republicans wouldn’t be trying so hard to game the election if the election didn’t matter.

don’t get me wrong, it’s a fight still. but it’s one i think we the people are able to win

I used to tell my daughter, “Being brave has nothing to do with not being scared. Being brave is being scared to death and doing the right thing anyway.”
