To cut hm some slack, Rose bet on his own team to win, then played his heart out. Trump, in a similar situation, would bet against his team, insinuate that he’d bet on his team but deny it with a wink when told it was illegal, then play even worse than normal, then claim that he was named MVP.

There’s not many things that get you blacklisted in MLB. Use all the steroids you want, punch as many wives and/or girlfriends you want, but if anybody catches even a whiff of gambling on the sport (even if it’s above-board) then you’re well and truly fucked. Something something integrity of the sport, I guess.

IIRC gambling used to be illegal almost everywhere, with a whole lot of looking the other way from authorities at all levels of society but no basis for anybody to argue about the details if somebody is so blatant and foolish as to get caught
Now you can basically bet on anything at the corner store, but there are these leftover blue-law rules
It’s another old culture war issue that nobody cares about anymore
In this case it’s another example of Trump excusing rule-breakers as long as they’re rich white men
