I had a kid who was truly a mess. Substance abuse, suicide attempts, depression, withdrawal. During her last hospitalization, it finally came out she was trans. When I saw her for follow-up, as she had started to transition, my first question was “How does it feel to be able to breathe?” The smile on her face was enough to get me through several shitty days after that.
