Safer way to do this is to use low voltage/high current and a small diameter wire (it can’t be copper, a strand of a bicycle brake cable works well).
There are a couple of ways to make this experiment a little safer:
- Wear Safety Glasses
- Never Do This

These guys are crazy, they build their own welders, tear magnetrons out of microwaves just to see how the radiation affects electronics. They seem not to give any thought to safety.

Not to mention that the steel would be soft as shit at those temps…
They do make heated wire cutters (which this is basically a really unsafe version of).
But man, imagine the instant toast you could cut from a loaf of bread!

I know I’ve seen a toast-while-you-cut knife in a film or somewhere, but I can’t remember where.
