I want to imagine some future where these works will be presented in a museum or the like, with proper historical context, to help us comprehend the magnitude of the crimes committed against the people from whom these things were taken.

It would be compelling to see a selection of these artefacts relinked to their original owners to allow them reflect and share their story. Sadly, this will likely be nearly impossible.

I wonder if those guards realize they are taking stuff from people that have left everything behind, so whatever they have with them is important to them.

And taking shoelaces because they could be weapons? Hell, you should could cut of their hands as well, or pull their teeth. Or just take out the biggest weapon of it all, the brain.

So we’re meant to parse this as amusing & heartwarming, yet if it had happened at Belsen, that’d be a different story.
