A new taxonomy of the "Dad Thriller" movie genre

I was most impressed at how good Drexl Spivey was as Smiley. Oldman has some range, alright.

I have particular tastes for horror. I like a lot of it but find much of it unwatchable. Not a fan of torture porn (never going to watch human centipede). Love things with a cult or supernatural bent. Really enjoyed Midsommar, the Void, The Endless (is that actually horror?). I enjoyed color out of space and Mandy.

My favorite is always a good haunted house movie but those seem to be hard to come by these days (Hill House and Bly manor, excellent). The Void was weird but I liked it! And Irish horror, like A Hole in the Ground or The Hallow. Lately everything seems to be about demons, which is fine I guess (I watched Paranormal Activity Next of Kin last night) but I am getting a little bored of it. I do try to avoid anything where the dog dies too gruesomely (the cats in Hill House were a bit much but I was already invested by that point).

I’d recommend…

Both low on gore and high on suspense.

Somedays, I’ll just be standing in the kitchen or something and randomly shout ALPACAS at my family…

I love the Innkeepers! (My husband does not have the patience for the Ti West ultra slow burn that I do) I have the other two on my watch list!

Right? It was legit scary!

I think you’ll enjoy the I am the pretty thing, too… For me, I like the Color out of Space, but it’s more ridiculous than scary… worth it, tho.

If the tagline for Color out of Space is “Alpacas”, I’m adding it to the watch list. I’m a sucker for surrealist humor.

It is not… but they end up playing a critical role in the plot.

Does any movie in this genre pass the Bechdel test?

Something seemed off about the theory until I clicked the article link and read the actual headline. It’s a new taxonomy of the “90s Dad Thriller”. i.e. a historical theory, nothing relevant to films of the last 20 years. i.e. clickbait

Yes. Professional writers should never try and get people to read their work… Doing so is pure clickbait… after all, it’s entirely possible to sustain one’s life in a capitalist economy without having any readers… Real writers do it for no audience whatsoever. /s

A few aren’t listed and a few don’t pass.

Having looked at a few of your specific links – and thanks for doing that work – I would say a lot of these barely squeak by. It’s supposed to be a bare-minimum indication, and that’s basically where these films seem to hover.

The bare minimum for being inclusive of women…

Hey, we’re only 51% of the population. Not mainstream, or anything.

Perish the thought! Stuff for the wimmins are niche culture!

I’ve only seen two on there: Independence day - awful, awful shite. Long boring and trite. Annoys me to have wasted that time. And contact which I’m surprised barely got past apparently. For me that was all about a main character who was a scientist and was a woman.

What’s surprising is that there are so many films, released in 2021, that don’t even do the bare minimum of effort.
