Just because the Republican party ca. 2016 has become even worse, doesn’t really change my point.
And if she doesn’t want to be accused of being a crypto-(or not so crypto-)Republican, then maybe she shouldn’t give highly paid secret speeches to big banks, commit election fraud, publically oppose but actually support the TPP &c. &c. And, well, the whole Goldwater thing.
It kinda does. Context matters.
Calling someone a Communist in 1900 would not carry the same connotations as calling someone the same thing in 1980. For that matter, calling someone a Republican back in 1920 (when Republicans were pro-women’s-suffrage and Democrats were against) and calling them one today imply very different views towards women.
