Itās important to always have an exit strategy.
Few people are clever enough for theirs to include telling Congress youāve lied for the President, though.
Hey Kids!
āGoing forward, we are raising the age restriction for purchase of firearms and ammunition to 21 years of age. We will update our processes as quickly as possible to implement this change,ā a statement said.
Wow. Walmart. Thatās going to piss off middle 'murica.
Guess itās up to the thousands of mom and pop bait, beer, guns and ammo shops to pick up the slack.
The participants at /r/conservative are beside themselves over the comments Trump made today.
Trump: āTake the guns first, go through due process secondā
Thanks, thatās pretty entertaining!
e.g.,
Iām becoming more and more convinced that heās just winging the presidency, and has no fucking clue what he is doing. Heās all over the place. Tomorrow he will probably be pro-gun, and then Friday he will be back to pushing gun control. He does this on other issues as well. One minute heās tough on immigration, and then the next minute heās pushing for amnesty. And I certainly donāt buy the ā5D chessā bullshit that his loyal supporters are always going on about.
And:
Trump says a lot of things. Itās better to just focus on his actions rather than trying to make sense of his stream of consciousness words.
Jeebus, bozo, thatās your partyās president!
Meh. If he ever proposes anything, heāll link it to his wall. āYou can have DACA, gun control, or whatās behind the curtain, and I get my wall.ā And when no one agrees, blames the next shooting on the Democrats playing politics with kidās lives.
Wait, I thought Obama was trying to TAKE OUR GERNSā¦?
She was around the White House in some capacity well before that, though, right? She may have been considering an exit before she took her current musical chair.
Pretty much everyone I know whoās remotely conservative, libertarian, etc etc is flipping their lid right now. After eight years of trying to convince everyone that our āultra liberal marxist presidentā is secretly trying to take our guns, despite Obama repeatedly saying that he has zero interest in doing so, they now have a President who is literally saying he wants to take your guns away without due process. Thereās no way to spin that into a pro-NRA stance.
"The Fred Meyer chain has locations in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska. The stores stopped selling assault-style rifles in Oregon, Washington and Idaho several years ago, according to the company, and will no longer accept āany special orders of these weaponsā in Alaska.
Looking at the comments this morning, it looks like the mods are doing damage control. Lots of comments have been deleted since I looked last.
āGood morning, Kroger shoppers! Today, weāre having a special on armor piercing bullets. Buy two, get one free. You can find all of our high-powered weaponry as well as free samples, near the end of the bread aisle.ā
I just took a look. They are a very unhappy bunch. This one jumped out at me:
IMO there are two positions that conservatives wonāt bend on, no matter what- guns and abortion. Any Republican, including Trump, who goes against guns or in favor of abortion canāt win. Trump can get away with a lot, but he needs to correct himself on this one.
Two things about that:
First, people sure like to get Trumpās appeal wrong over and over, whether they are his allies or his opponents. When he made that deal with the democrats on hurricane relief a few conservative commentators said his base would abandon him, but he went on to spike to his highest approval ratings ever. Conservatives (or reactionaries) who support Trump donāt get that he isnāt a Conservative and that none of his supporters give a shit about Conservative values. The Republican party base is not conservatives or value voters or evangelicals, itās authoritarians. Sure, they donāt want Trump to take their guns, but they love the idea of him flexing his presidential muscle and taking guns from bad guys. They trust him to know the right thing to do.
His supporters are going to love this.
Second, I love how they are just tacitly admitting full on racism. They are saying there is a line that he canāt cross, itās just that racism and misogyny wasnāt it.
Well thatās going to do wonders for the stereotypes the genre had been facing for years
While they can definitely interpret it that way, in the same meeting, Trump also:
ā¢ vowed to ban bump stocks
ā¢ promised to raise the purchase age for guns to 21
ā¢ said he was open to the exact gun control guidelines the Democrats are pushing
ā¢ said that the NRAās #1 legislative priority, inter-state concealed-carry laws, would never happen
Iāve got a feeling that the NRA is a bit confused about the candidate they thought theyād bought for $3 millionā¦ which is probably exactly why Trump is doing this.
Makes sense to me, as it goes right along with him saying heās not afraid of the NRA, and with accusing others of having that fear.
Heās often like a bullying, posing child. āNo one can push me around! NO ONE!ā
For the NRA, every inch of ground the pro-control groups wins has the potential of a mile of ground being captured in the favor of pro-control groups in the future. The NRA at all levels depend on fear. Iāll give you this scenarioā¦
If the gun sales purchase age is raised to 21 years old, the NRA would have to change what kind of propaganda they make. Older white people who are deathly scared of being attacked by young people/teenagers (especially of teenagers of color) might feel safer walking down the streets thus affecting gun sales and public sentiments about concealed carry laws. That could also make their anti-BLM propaganda much less effective too. Not only that, but a dip in gun crime from an increased lack of guns on the street would show much more clearly that the NRA had been trying to blow smoke up everyoneās ass for decades and possibly create a avalanche of demands for much tougher overall gun control.
The NRA have wargamed this sort of scenario out many times before going by how panicked they have been acting lately about how corporations are running away from them as fast as they can.
I suspect if Trump ever does offer anything solid on gun control, itāll be chained to his wall, just like his DACA ādealā.
After heās turned down, he will attempt to blame the Democrats at every future shooting.
It wouldnāt be a day ending in Y if Democrats (including the fresh-off-of-losing-in-2016 vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine) didnāt fundamentally misunderstand the contours of the political landscape in this country.
