North Korea has the capacity to level Seoul in twenty minutes with conventional artillery alone, according to State Department estimates. The reason that artillery is in place is as a bargaining chip, to ensure that the ceasefire put in place at the end of the Korean War holds in place.
Once you start to introduce laser weapons systems and advanced anti-ballistic shields into the equation, that balance of power changes and the system that has protected North Korea for the last 60 years starts to disintegrate.
Up until now, that balance of power has been maintained by the sanity of each successive president. Trump, on the other hand, doesnāt read intelligence briefingsā because heās āa smart guy.ā Whatās the best way to rescue flagging approval ratings? Intervention against an unjust power on the other side of the planetā¦
If you were in charge of North Korea and you were aware that the threat that has kept you in power until now is rapidly becoming redundant, why wouldnāt you escalate? Equally, if the last chance you have of maintaining that threat (the nuclear equipped sub) is sunk as soon as it leaves its dock, what other option do you have but to double down and kick off?
There is literally no advantage to NK showing restraint in the event that the US sinks that sub. Theyāre fucked either way; why not try to repeat the āsuccessā of the last Korean War and unify the peninsula under The Great Leader?

Nah, let her speak the more she says the less likely she mounts a comeback. I mean her approach is probably better than bomb civilians directly ourselves, bar their entry into our country, and then throw our hands up in the air when the conflict escalates. Our track record is awful but has has absolutely gotten worse and not better in the short time since Trumps inauguration.
Better yet would be to change gears to humanitarian efforts that ushers refugees into the country and into allied countries instead, but even that would likely result in the deaths of the humanitarian workers because the political ambition is to encourage nationalism and to have the west leave their interests alone.
