A thread of our own- misogyny (Part 1)

As long as I can still make fun of them for having no sexual prowess or desirability to others whatsoever, absolutely.

Not because that’s my own personal metric of ‘total worth’, but because it’s theirs.

My mom comes from a traditional “man is master of the house” type of family, she rose above her conditioning to become pretty successful in her chosen, very not-traditionally-feminine career, where she had to battle prejudice against her as a woman, and so on… but as she’s getting old she’s unfortunately sliding more and more back into that bigoted mindset that she had been raised in. This right here is something she’d absolutely appreciate, and just the thought of that breaks my heart.

To make it worse, she’s such a terrible influence on my brother in this aspect. He’s still in his '20s and while he used to be kind of an edgelord in his teenage years he had developed into a pretty decent guy re: women later… but now my mom, whom he really respects, is constantly spouting male chauvinist/macho stereotype-affirming shit at him, and I can see the results in him. Just this Christmas they were going on about how “ugh women bosses are the worst, women are just not cut out for that” (says the woman who used to be a very successful team/department leader) and “this family can’t get its shit together because there’s no father figure to make decisions” and “women’s football is ridiculous, and all the players look like men!” and I’m just sick and tired of it.

“But polls have found that most men and women in the conservative Muslim country believe harassment is justified if women dress “provocatively” in public.”

By no means is it just here, as with everything else we see the USian manifestation of a global disease.

I’m re-watching Fantastic Voyage (1966) after recently making a science-based painting, and rolling my eyes at Raquel Welch’s circumstance of being trapped in Hollywood’s classic Woman Scientist/Incompetent Woman dichotomy.
Meanwhile, the ship captain with extensive engineering experience needs assistance reading body charts that look like they’re lifted from a child’s coloring book.

Uh-oh. They’re shooting the laser gun. God forbid the lady laser scientist shoot her own gun. She’ll put her eye out. :eye: :gun:

Ugh, jeebus. I did not know that. I suppose I should be glad to have become informed, but, ugh. Blech.

That does sound very stressful to deal with.

Sometimes I think, “I was happier not knowing that.”

Hmmm… bunch of white guys who were edgelords back in the day turning out to have shitty opinions. Couldn’t have seen that coming. /s

Nah… IIRC, dude came out with some serious weak sauce defenses of Harvey Weinstein; unfuck that enabler of sexual predators.

What is that old saying? Never get to know your heroes? Something like that. Sigh.

Cue Abe Simpson. He is 80?

He lived long enough to be the subject of his own satire.

Long lost love for Gilliam. I thought Brazil spoke well, to a certain sense of cultural paranoia. I’ve also not been shocked, over the years, to see what side of that he landed on.
(Or to put it another way, 13 year old me thought Gilliam was making valid cultural criticism. 40x year old me thinks he should take a walk off a pier.)

He’s basically saying that because white men are being blamed for everythingexpected to take responsibility, he wishes he were anything else.
