Their opinion is victim-blaming," he said. “It reads like something from decades ago. Their two bases for overturning the conviction — one was that the victim didn’t act the way they wanted, and the other was that the accused surely wouldn’t rape somebody that he knew, which shows that these three judges haven’t got a clue when it comes to what sexual assault looks like. So, it’s just going to send an incredibly bad message to the survivor community.”

A refrain I’ve heard ad nauseum is “I can’t believe this happened – it’s 2019”. I disagree. This attack and the ensuing media circus are par for the course in 2019. In both my native United States and here in the United Kingdom, it always has been and still is open season on the bodies of (in no specific order) people of colour, indigenous people, transgender people, disabled people, queer people, poor people, women and migrants. I have evaded much of the violence and oppression imposed on so many others by our capitalist, white supremacist, patriarchal system because of the privileges I enjoy by dint of my race, health, education, and conventional gender presentation. That has nothing to do with the merit of my character.

The press coverage, and timely law enforcement response, was not coincidental to our complexions. Neither was the disproportionate online reaction over the victimisation of a pretty brunette and blonde. The commodification and exploitation of my face came at the expense of other victims whose constant persecution apparently does not warrant similar moral outrage.

Make the extraordinary reaction to our attack the norm. I beg you to amplify and channel this energy to hold accountable the intersecting web of elected politicians, government agencies and corporations who have reinforced a status quo of clearly delineated inequality long before this single attack in 2019. Redirect your money from rainbow capitalism to people-of-colour-led organisations striving for justice.

When perceived electability is removed from consideration, the Democratic primary race tightens significantly.

  • When choosing a preferred president absent considerations of electability, 21% chose Warren, 19% chose Biden, 19% chose Sanders, 16% chose Buttigieg, 12% chose Harris, and 4% chose O’Rourke.

This poll points to gender as the primary factor when considering who is and who is not electable.

It’s sad that I don’t believe this because I don’t believe anything on the internet anymore, but then again, I never let the truth get in the way of a good story. #trueevenifitsnottrue

You have no appreciation for medical humor then. Many pediatric texts list normal values for a variety of lab tests. Frequently cited is a “serum porcelain level.”

Secondary authors on research papers are sometimes listed as jokes. Richard Braine is frequently cited, as are Dick Cranium and M. Richard Burns. Is it juvenile? Absolutely. Is it checked? Never. I completely believe this, because i have seen similar entries in peds texts with some frequency.

No appreciation? Quite the contrary. No familiarity? True. But I am glad to be instructed.

Mod note:

Women are dramatically underrepresented online, especially in discussion forums, where they are, inevitably, subject to forms of abuse most men will never experience, and many men have difficulty understanding even a little of the scope of the issue.

We are extremely fortunate here on the BBS to have a group of women who are not only willing to identify as such, but also willing to be active, dedicated, good-faith posters in our community, as well.

Despite this fact, I’d like to remind everyone that the ratio of men to women here is still drastically out of balance, and ask that you keep this in mind when women choose to speak on topics specific to their gender, especially topics like this one specifically created to discuss them.

Thank you.

I dare say we’ve all seen this passage, unfortunately it bears repeating.

Novelist Margaret Atwood writes that when she asked a male friend why men feel threatened by women, he answered, “They are afraid women will laugh at them.” When she asked a group of women why they feel threatened by men, they said, “We’re afraid of being killed.”
