A thread of our own- misogyny (Part 1)

Wow… the men’s soccer team failed, so ‘all’ of the USA “failed.”

The sheer audacity.

Megan Rapinoe is using her platform to argue against people who say they ‘care about women’s sports’ but only when it comes to trans women and girls:

Strict sex segregation was introduced in 1921 to protect men’s football after WW1, not to protect women.

It’s difficult to tell from a player at her peak 100 years ago with few filmed games, but from the written descriptions Lily Parr may have been good enough for the England mens team. She was definitely being scouted by some big name mens league teams.

And depending on the artificial implants he put into her body without consent, there’s always a risk of medical problems requiring further surgery. Is he going to pay for that? Or live with the medical risks of that? Yeah, no.

Not shocking, actually. When my wife had bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, the surgeon “took the liberty” of adding an extra 50 cc to the prosthetic “for cosmetic outcome.” She was not terribly pleased.

That’s a terrible series of events in her life. The ending of this article was odd, though. I wish that the whole “defense of Woody Allen” angle would stop being raised with every actor who has appeared in his films. Repeatedly reporting that he was professional and appropriate with some doesn’t mean he was incapable of behaving differently with others. It’s not a difficult concept to grasp, and every time I see it, it makes me wonder about the people bringing it up and why they’re so invested in pushing positive messages about him.

Is this the time to bring up the whole problem with reconstruction surgery being covered by insurance ONLY if it’s a woman with breast cancer? It’s so so very important for her breasts to appear ‘normal’ to men – the man in her life plus even strangers on the street – that even though it is not necessary for medical treatment in any way, and similar plastic surgery after other forms of cancer is not covered, this one particular scenario is special.

Please tell me there are ways to report that beyond the realm of the Internet. That’s a real violation.

I agree. It had no reason to be there, other than to defend Woody Allen.

Right? I can only imagine it’s a defense of “white male genius” that has allowed white men to get away with some truly heinous shit because people get the feels from their work. Lars Von Trier, I’m looking at you.

Maybe. We didn’t, mostly because there were far more important things going on. Almost as soon as she was recovered from her diagnosis and surgery, I was diagnosed with colon cancer, so it was a whirlwind year. We had thought 2018 would be “the worst year ever.” Sigh, little did we know…

People claiming trans women will take over women’s sport clearly have never been to roller derby.

Most derby is highly inclusive… and cis women aren’t being dominated or pushed out by trans women. It is, as Rapinoe points out, lack of funds and space that are the threats, not letting various people play.

And anyone who thinks women’s sports aren’t as physical and bloody as men’s has never been to derby. It’s punishing. It takes strength and endurance… all those things that trans women will supposedly out do cis women at. Yet, funnily, it just hasn’t seemed to happen. Hmm… wonder why? Could it be that this supposed athletical prowess of the trans woman and her ability to destroy women’s spaces might be a myth?

Yes, yes, it’s a myth, in case that wasn’t clear.

It’s based on the other myth of “delicate, fragile and vulnerable women-folk in need of big, strong men to protect them.” Any male who grew up with sisters already knows better than than. Any male who participated in sports in which women were equally competitive (I was a swimmer) knows better. In short, most males know better. It is just a convenient way to shit on a vulnerable minority. But you all knew that already.

I know a few women who attended my high school who could definitely knock me on my ass in soccer.

I currently play in a co-ed soccer league (an over 30 league with the Houston Women’s Soccer Assoc, lots of fun). Hasn’t been long at all since a woman knocked me on my ass on the pitch. In none of the coed leagues that I’ve played in through the years, was the specter of trans women somehow unfairly hindering cis women ever even mentioned. Its almost like its just a made up problem that never existed.

Kind of like when a girl joined my high school football team. The football coach was furious and ranted and raved about how it would ruin everything, but she played and nothing at all got ruined

It also makes no sense on an economic level. In most sports a moderately successful man will make more money that all but the top women. The prize money is also higher, as I pointed out last year.

Transitioning to a woman is a bad move in sports unless you genuinely are trans.

Besides that, if the sex segregation was lifted in association football then women will inevitably play in what is now the mens game. It’s a combination of skills, being the strongest, fastest or tallest is never enough to make a successful player.

The first female Egyptian ship captain…so you know what happened when the Ever Given was in trouble.

She was hundreds of miles away on a different boat at the time:
