A thread of our own- misogyny (Part 1)

Another field where women made important contributions to the founding and then were largely written out of the historical narrative as anything other than adjacent to men.

I donā€™t think this has been posted here yet:

Thereā€™s a lot to get angry about, but this really stood out to me:

breastfeeding children count against the 34-person traveling party limit, putting women coaches in an impossible spot.

Maybe the message will go further (and last longer in peopleā€™s minds) this timeā€¦ :crossed_fingers:t4:

Also recently saw a great episode of the show Sex Education on Netflix that brought up this issue. Hereā€™s a clip and an article about it:

Yes, I remember that episode, one of many other powerful, humanizing, connection-affirming scenes in a show thatā€™s only ostensibly a teen sex comedy. Canā€™t wait for the next season.

really terrible decision by the minnesota state supreme court mad even worse by being unanimousā€“

from a pay-walled washington post story:

"After a 20-year-old woman took five shots of vodka and a prescription pill, she said she was standing outside a Minneapolis bar in May 2017 when a man invited her and a friend to a party. She agreed but soon found out there was no gathering, she later testified.

She ā€œblacked outā€ instead, waking up on a couch and found that the man she had just met was allegedly sexually assaulting her, according to court records.

Almost four years later, the Minnesota Supreme Court unanimously ruled this week that Francios Momolu Khalil, 24, cannot be found guilty of rape because the woman got drunk voluntarily beforehand. The decision Wednesday overturned Khalilā€™s prior conviction of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, which had been upheld by an appeals court, and granted him the right to a new trial."

absolutely preposterous decision. i donā€™t care when she drank or how much she had to drink, if she was unconscious she could not possibly have consented. this is the worst timeline.

I wonder if theyā€™ll apply this to medicine. Like once a patient has been put under anesthesia they now can be operated on at the pleasure of surgeon and any medical students without consent since they agreed to be put under in the first place.

Because they should.

Was wondering the same thing about other crimes, like theft. Does every charge become some low-level misdemeanor if the victim voluntarily gets drunk? Asking for friends in the Midwest whoā€™d love to buy some judges and legislators a few rounds of drinksā€¦

It was also sickening to read that similar laws/legal definitions exist in the majority of states.

I will make a special trip to take part in this action. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

So I understand this, in Minnesota, if a woman has had a few drinks, sheā€™s fair game for sexual assault? And women justices thought this was ok? What in all the hells is going on up there?

to my mind itā€™s objectively worse than the way you stated it. the way i read it, instead of saying that she couldnā€™t give consent because she was unconscious they ruled that because she was unconscious she couldnā€™t withhold consent, which really turns things upside down.

It really is difficult not to think that surely something is missing here.

So itā€™s okay to rape someone because they happen to have rendered themselves basically comatose? Really??

I think it might be because the state distinguishes between violent/forceful rape and so-called date-rape (which is a gross distinction to make, but not all that uncommon unfortunately) and the ruling means that the perpetrator can/will be charged with a lesser offense. The WaPo article says that heā€™ll be charged with fifth-degree misdemeanor sexual assault (blech) and that the voluntary intoxication loophole is the (old, poorly written) law in many states.

Remember, itā€™s not really rape if at any point in the evening she was enjoying herself! She got herself drunk, so itā€™s her own fault for being able to be raped. How is a guy to know that she doesnā€™t want sex, now that she is drunk?

Which is still bullshit. MOST rapes are ā€œdateā€ rapes.

Basically, they want us to keep our legs shut and be broodmares and nothing more. We are not people to them.

Damn, that is a take I had just refused to accept. ā€œConsent is assumed, and must be actively denied to be taken as no. In her state she was unable to withdraw consent, therefore there was no rape.ā€ OMFG :face_vomiting:

Somehow I feel worse that she lied instead of simply saying yes. No need for details beyond Iā€™ll explain more when youā€™re older.

More effective if you can tie it to current behavior that includes them: ā€˜thereā€™s a reason I never leave you alone with my parentsā€™ or ā€˜thatā€™s why I act weird when Iā€™m scaredā€™ or ā€˜thatā€™s why Iā€™m so committed to helping you learn how to be a good human beingā€™. So they know there are long term consequences but also itā€™s possible to make things better.
