Ummm…no. Iwo Jima has been rising astoundingly rapidly in geologic terms for many years as the magma chamber beneath it inflates. I don’t see how the construction of a short-lived scoria edifice on another volcano has anything to do with Iwo Jima’s rising–an actual eruption would bury those ships beneath volcanic debris, not expose them. If IJ does have a massive caldera-forming eruption again, as it has in the past, the effects on Japan would be dire.

Or it’s just that the stars are right.
