Academy Awards apologizes to Sacheen Littlefeather for racist abuse at 1973 ceremony

Actual liberals working in Hollywood laugh at the idea that Hollywood itself is liberal, though. They know full well it’s run by conservative capitalism; the conservatism is, in some respects, minimally leavened by its capitalism, ironically - trying to appeal to the largest audience means having the occasional female/gay/person of color characters that so enrages the far right. (The far right seeing itself as centrist, of course, so everyone who disagrees with them must be liberal/“the left.”) Actually leftist creatives have always existed in Hollywood, pushing at the strictures created and enforced by the conservative executives who make the, you know, actual decisions. It’s those executives who give us decisions like trying to cast Julia Roberts as… Harriet Tubman.

Hollywood, 1973: But we put one of you guys in that “Crying Indian” commercial two years ago! What more could you possibly want?

Indigenous Americans: Actually we thought that was kind of a dated stereotype which was underwritten by the beverage industry to shift blame for plastic pollution. Also, the actor you hired was an Italian-American.

Hollywood: Ugh, FINE. Maybe we’ll put together a big-budget movie set in the Civil War where you guys get to be the secondary protagonists who help the white hero find purpose. How does 1990 work for you?

Or if there’s money to be made from the apology. Never forget that option

We’re not quite at the “Talking about it” stage here in Australia, but we are in the “Talking about talking about it” stage. Much better with the current government, as the former government wouldn’t even do that
