One wonders what business that might be…
They will not rescue personal belongings including fishing gear. Salvage crews will go out and recover the snow mobiles/ATVs. The owner pays the bill. If it leaks fuel or oil the Clean Water Act kicks in and there can be substantial fines.
They don’t need no “ice mandate” telling them what to do. They are born free and will die free. And damn near did.
Being “free” didn’t always highly correlate with death-level stupidity but it seems to be the norm these days.
Okay, not strictly on topic but one ice fishing story and one Great Lakes ice story.
Lake Huron sits higher than Lake Erie so water flows around 2 - 6mph, dependent on a lot of things, into Lake Erie by way of the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair.
Currently the river is plugged solid due to ice coming down from Lake Huron, it stops all that water from flowing dropping the lake level significantly and causes flooding up river. In the last couple days the lake has dropped at least a foot. In prior years when the blockage goes on for weeks the lake has dropped several feet. My canal dried up one spring until the ice was freed up. This photo happened within about 3 days. Notice how thick the ice is.
It’s another reason to know the ice conditions before heading out. I’ve been on the ice when a crack happens, it’s quite a loud sound.
Now for an ice fishing story. This mayor does not want to allow ice fishing on a small lake in Ohio because once you allow ice fishing, prostitution is sure to follow.
I mean, yeah. It’s the only logical next step
They’ve come close - I recall in 1992-1993, as a freshman in college a friend was in Houghton MI at MTU and emailed “horray! it stopped snowing!”, then mentioned it was because (at least from there westward) Superior froze over and turned off the lake effect machine. A week or more of sub-zero-F fun. That’s when I learned to really enjoy splashing through a foot of snow, in shorts under the blue sky, in Golden CO. Those lakes are nice to visit but I don’t miss living near them all year long…
