I think the discussion of what exactly his project entailed was to some extent a rebuttal to the narrative of him as a young genius being suppressed by ignorant people with purely racist motives. It is possible to see him as yet another victim of zero tolerance, without having to accept the entire narrative that his sister put out to the media.
