I’ve been seeing some “I didn’t think we’d have to deal with child labor and polio in 21st century America” comments in response to this story, but the thing is, child labor never went away here. Agriculture has remained an exception to child labor laws, and a lot of fairly young children make up a sizable portion of the workforce. It’s exactly the same dynamic as this - it’s immigrant children, or the American-born children of immigrants, usually brought into the workforce by their parents because they’re not being paid enough to survive on.
