Why do i do this to myself? Why did i look at the comments … on AOL?
Exactly. Laziness /s
An anarchist would probably be more inclined to say that political behavior is reflective of the hierarchical power relationships that define the political system within which they operate.
Politics don’t cease to exist in an anarchist society, they are just more evenly distributed
Why do i do this to myself? Why did i look at the comments … on AOL ?
You’re a masochist in denial?
I suspect its not the pain of the experience that attracts me, but the outrage i feel after. I suspect this is no healthier for me.
I remember I used to read Yahoo comments all the time, but then I saw the Yahoo comments vitriol spread to other news sites. Then YouTube came and then Facebook went global… and now we’re here where basically every article has astroturfing for some rich guy’s agenda (and one prolific HRC poster).
On Boing Boing’s old Disqus forum I went by just Gulliver, which I brought over from being active on Yahoo forums. As in Lemuel Gulliver among the Yahoos. I used to be even more of an insufferable smart-ass.
I suspect that at least some of AOC’s haters don’t even comprehend her. There must be another shoe waiting to drop because how could someone actually want to get into politics to help others? People she hasn’t met and isn’t beholden to because they dotated to her campaign? Corrupt, selfish people assume everyone is corrupt and selfish. So she’s merely hiding her corruption and selfishness, because being honest and altruistic simply isn’t possible.
Side-effect of Randian might-makes-right bullshit. Those who believe only the ruthless and selfish can prevail will assume all who prevail are ruthless and selfish.
To be fair, that’s only true in the Northeast. Everywhere else, lobater is very expensive. Not that it matters to your basic point, mind you, but it is what it is.
But… why ? Paying people decently shouldn’t make anyone mad !
Something something “socialism” and “whataboutism”.
So you’re an anarchist then?
Looked at a certain way, perhaps…
“That’s libertarians for you — anarchists who want police protection from their slaves.” – Kim Stanley Robinson, Green Mars
No sexual innuendo intended but I think I may love you ^^, …
Hmmm…
12 hours later, and yet all I hear is:
Gee, it’s like some comments have no verisimilitude or basis in factual reality…
I didn’t say where it was trickling down from now did I?
For all our founders’ good intent, they basically ended up establishing a democratic republic ‘by and for the people’ in name only.
Which is what they intended to do.
In England, at this day, if elections were open to all classes of people, the property of landed proprietors would be insecure. An agrarian law would soon take place. If these observations be just, our government ought to secure the permanent interests of the country against innovation. Landholders ought to have a share in the government, to support these invaluable interests, and to balance and check the other. They ought to be so constituted as to protect the minority of the opulent against the majority.
— James Madison, Statement (1787-06-26) as quoted in Notes of the Secret Debates of the Federal Convention of 1787 by Robert Yates
.
The founders were quite explicitly opposed to genuine democracy. Government of the people, by the wealthy, for the wealthy.
Which is what they intended to do.
Do I really need to use the sarcasm tag or scare quotes around the words “good intent” in that comment?
You know I am well aware that all this shit was quite intentional, despite all the sugar-coated lies and nationalistic propaganda we Americans have been inundated with since the beginning…
May we live to see the dawn, my friend.
I plan on all of us to see it. Daylight or bust!
Also, and I should have put this in my previous reply, I figure what I posted in my comment is some of what you were referring to. Powwowing with friends so my comments don’t run afoul of directly insulting certain recent arrivals who might or might not reside beneath metaphorical bridges.
Nah, we got a little bit of popcorn left.
