FWIW, Charlie Stross (one of the more talented SF writers of our time) committed basically the same sin in his Eschaton universe (though granted he abandoned it as, in his words, it was too broken).

Most SF ideas have been recycled time and again. My opinion is that good SF is more about good storytelling than original science fantasy ideas.
