As many times as I’ve tried I still can’t imagine what he must have sounded like in the “Drill Sergeant” phase of his career.
“ALRIGHT YOU MAGGOTS, I WANT YOU TO GET YOUR PHTHALO-GREEN ASSES UP THAT PRISTINE RIDGE IN FIFTEEN GODDAMN SECONDS, YOU HEAR? WE’VE GOT SOME REAL FUCKING NATURAL SPLENDOR TO TAME!”
I was sad to find that–despite there being ten thousand tablet drawing apps–there isn’t a clear one able to do alla prima techniques with oils and palette knifes.
Trying to get more, for when we run out of what’s on YouTube
I enjoy painting and sometimes attend drop-in life drawing sessions and plein air outings with groups like the Urban Sketchers. When the subject of Bob Ross has come up in conversation, it amazes me how many amuteur artists really resent Bob. The common complaint is he isn’t an “artist” and he doesn’t produce “art”.
Back in my college days, one of my bookstore co-workers told me Bob Ross was their must-watch Saturday morning show.
Apparently they were normally hung over from the night before, and Bob’s voice was particularly soothing when you’re feeling the pain.
I recall reading an article (maybe in the NYT) about how Ross’ ability is unfairly criticized based on his show. The whole point of the show was to keep things simple so beginners could make a non-terrible picture under an hour. But he was also an artist when he wasn’t on the show and spent more time on the pictures he actually cared about.
Museum More in the Netherlands will host the first solo-exhibition in a museum dedicated to Bob Ross: https://www.museummore.nl/tentoonstelling/bob-ross

Because of a partial lockdown the exhibition will not open on november 8 as planned.
