A few years ago the Peas Twins caught me in a moral conundrum. I always tell them to practice empathy and assume the best about people. I try to demonstrate those qualities in my everyday life, but one day they asked me something to the effect of; “You always tell us to respect people, but then you say you have no respect for donald trump.” Which made me stop and think very carefully about what I would say next.
What I finally said was, essentially; “I have empathy for 8 year old Donald (see, I’m even willing to capitalize his name!). He was just a child who was apparently unloved and taught the ways of cruelty and pettiness. A child tends to reflect the world they know and are usually emulating the ways they’ve seen the adults around them act. I feel deep sorrow and sympathy for that child. However, at some point, that child had to grow into a man and to some degree contemplate the world he was brought up in, the lessons he was taught and the way others benefitted or suffered by that example. trump chose to be a cruel, heartless and petty man and does so every day he wakes up. He killed that little child for the convenience of wealth and hatred. For him, I have no sympathy, nor can I comprehend how he makes it through each day without seeing himself with utter contempt.”
No one is born a Nazi. Even if you’re raised in a Nazi household, at some point you are responsible for choosing that path (notwithstanding those who are in captivity or abusive situations and are forced into a certain life). This piece of shit chose to be a Nazi. Of all things, a FUCKING NAZI! He can rot for eternity and I sincerely hope that his death was preceded by at least a moment of clarity in which he realized all of the relationships he destroyed, all of the hate he spread and how utterly futile it was.

I often find myself incredulous as to the trend of these people that keep doing the bad things, get caught, and not effectively punished (little to no consequences), over and over, and still unbelievably keep doing the bad things.
Perhaps if we (as a society) try to absolutely minimize the consequences for the bad behaviour even more… then maybe they will stop?

Everyone faces choices in their lives, and we all have the option of being good people or bad. Sometimes those choices are hard, and it’s not always clear which is the good option. But often times it is very clear, and I am bewildered that some people choose instead to go for the shittiest option available. They don’t have to be a bad person, but they choose to be, and double down on that choice. I don’t understand it, but I am comfortable in condemning it.
