Jews were historically more urban because in many places they weren’t allowed to own land, or were in constant danger of being driven out, and so gravitated towards more portable livelihoods. Thus the cliché of the Jewish moneylender/pawnbroker/diamond seller/lawyer/etc. You can’t pack a cornfield into a suitcase and flee a pogrom.
EDIT: So, yeah, bigotry, but of a different kind and scope than queerophobia.
But often I find that “Socialism” whether being demanded or demonized is simply “Social Democracy” that has been rebranded via repetition by persons opposed to the concept & that being opposed to it, their detractors will shout their support for it.
In essence, a propaganda WIN for the far-right that anyone but a lunatic fringe would see actual Socialism as an actual prospect in North America, so much so that they get swept into rhetorical chaos and no one ever talks about the achievable thing, Social Democracy.
I’m sure we all have our own ideas of what constitutes a free market, and what constitutes government management of the economy, “free market” is often used as a mantra by those who oppose environmental regulation, labor regulation, the minimum wage… In that respect, I’m hardly a free marketer.
Overall, Millennials offer the murky impression of a generation that doesn’t really understand basic economics. To be fair, neither do most Americans. Or many economists, perhaps. Or most journalists. Economics is hard.
Without a comparison to the rest of the country, another “this new crop o’ young’uns are nutty!” rant just seems crotchety.
The bulleted list of how libs/cons could use this data to skew either way was pretty funny, too. Since when has any political establishment PR firm ever staked big claims on what the newest generation thinks?
Don’t forget that working in any of those fields was considered wrong by both Christians and Muslims, so Jews had to do it. I’ve mentioned elsewhere on this forum about Tibetan Buddhist refugees being forced to work as butchers because in that form of Buddhism it’s only the killing, not the eating, that brings bad karma. It’s just another version of forcing the outsiders to do your dirty work for you to keep your own hands/conscience clean.
Yes, I own a business, respect private property, exercise my rights wherever applicable & don’t fear a social democracy at all.
People that want to destroy my customer base and diminish my labour market by contributing to income disparity by opposing those things you mention really need to keep their hands off my free market
