Based on some very cursory research; I’m forced to conclude that, at a minimum, even significantly nastier diseases don’t bring out the better angels of our natures; and quite likely that the same basic mechanics are at work.

In addition to attacks on medical staff you’ve got unwise removal of the infectious into the general population, doctor-on-doctor homicide; and orphan abandonment driven by fear of contagion.

The left wing and right wing generally use different definitions of freedom and liberty.

  • left wing liberty is about making sure that your neighbours are free to do as they please, as long as it does not infringe on other peoples liberty. The idea is that if everyone does that then everyone ends up free. It’s not perfect, but libertarian socialists are not utopians despite what tankies claim. Antivax is the opposite of this, although this does not mean that there aren’t left wing antivaxxers (people are not logical, and the left are just as vulnerable to making bad choices).

  • right wing liberty is all about making sure that you, the individual, are free to do as you please, even if that means that other people are denied their liberty. This is why there are so many right wing antivaxxers, their “right” to not be vaxxinated overrides everyone elses choice to not be infected by diseases. It’s also the reason why we have Hoppean libertarians, who are basically fascists who don’t have a government.
