Twenty years ago I spent a few seasons volunteering on a whale watch boat out of Gloucester, doing education and outreach for The Ocean Alliance, Payne’s organization. We once did a twilight watch watch, and Payne was with us. There’s nothing quite like hanging out around the wheelhouse at sunset looking for humpbacks with the very guy who changed the way we think about whales. One of my most treasured memories.
When I was probably 4 or so, my parents got a record of whale songs… it was one of those flexible records, maybe from National Geographic?
Anyway - I HATED it. I didn’t like loud sounds in general, and this was loud and weird.
That’s awesome! I think I remember that picture.
And what do whales listen to? Blue Oyster Cult?
Or ‘Whale meet again’…
…is that my coat?
Two whales in a bar, one goes “ooohOOOOHwoo Woo uh WoooOooh!”
The other one says “Dude, you are so bad at karaoke when you’re drunk.”
My favorite whale song is at the beginning of “Flying Whales” by Gojira… an outstanding metal band from Bayonne, France.
