I we have to admit, if they had guns the outcome might have been different.

Recently I’ve heard the theory that it may have been evolutionarily advantageous to be a bad liar. We usually think the opposite way, but the reality is that being a functional part of the community is better than any selfishness could ever really be. It’s very hard to be so smart and so good at lying that you can fool everyone. On the other hand, if you are a bad liar you are pushed into trustworthiness because you never get away with anything.

Anyway, the projection thing is just limited imagination. We only know what consciousness and thought are from our own observations of ourselves. If we are always looking for ways to steal things, it just makes sense to assume others are as well. Most people don’t get that others really think about the world very differently than they do - and I don’t think smart has a lot to do with it.
