You mean people keep bringing up all the historical baggage of Antifaschistische Aktion when you say Antifa, but forget about it and take the term at purely literal value when you say Anti-fascist? That sounds so very plausible.
I think you’re trying to be a majorette and start a parade you can lead
I’m more led by history, I thought that was obvious.
You know you like those boots & baton.
Historically speaking, arguments about the historic meanings of words have a history of falling flat. For reference, see the whole “Karen” debate.
Thank you for permission.
We already have. And we’re doing a damn fine job with it too.
But I’ll let everyone know you gave us permission at the antifa clubhouse, on the antifa mailing list, and at the communist party meetings.
You know - if we could just find the right phrase for abortion- the other side would give up.
Antifa, in a certain historical context, meant a specific movement of Communists.
Libertarianism, in a certain historical context, meant a specific movement of socialist-anarchists.
I do historical linguistics for fun. Let me tell you about semantic drift: If words only had the meanings they had once, then it would be reasonable in English to say
A deer climbed a peach tree and ate an apple. It was unhappy, and so because the meat it ate was poisoned, it starved.
Because if you go back far enough, “deer” < dyr meant “an animal”, “apple” < æppel meant “a fruit”, “unhappy” < hap meant “unlucky”, “meat” < mēt meant “food”, and “starve” < steorfan meant “to die”.
Words do, in fact mean things. Words don’t always mean what they used to mean. That’s how language works. And history.
Notwithstanding the efforts of the likes of l’Académie française, language doesn’t work by fiat.
And you, sir, are no Académie française.
Takes on Senator Lloyd Bentsen’s takedown of Dan Quayle will NEVER get old for me
Where’s the Lumpenproletariat on the Bristol Stool Scale?
and notably they won’t even if you/we/everyone does bow down
they’ve already proven they’ll hurt people of color, pregnant people, trans people, gay people - married and otherwise - even in the rare instances where someone included in one ( or more ) of those groups does actually support them ( log cabin republicans have entered the chat )
cruelty is the point. and they’re happy being complete @#&holes to each other. it makes their day
It makes plenty of sense. The White Rose was Anti-Fascist. You can associate Antifa with them on the basis of Anti-Fascism, but they’re not the same group. There’s a reason for that, mostly based on the acts that each took.
It may have been that. It’s lost it’s trademark.
You may be aware of Kleenex, Velcro and ChapStick, but what about escalator? Or dumpster? Linoleum, zipper, trampoline? All of these are (or were) trademarks of companies whose products were so successful that they came to represent an entire category. And it can actually cause quite a problem for those companies.
I’ve been holding off posting this here, but I feel like the time is right for category debate bingo:
This is displayed in my guest toilet.
I was just talking to a bird that claimed to be Antifa, but I let him know that he’s a communist dinosaur.
