Are you going to keep it or get rid of it?
Just curious, given recent events.
Who “you?”
You, Les_Pane, administrator of tweet links. Who else?
… at some point even Hanlon’s razor has to come down on the side of “this is what malice looks like”
For as much Musk hate there is here I am surprised that getting rid of the tweet button is being ignored.
Weird.
Seems like a no brainer.
If not ditch the TWEET link, I wish there were more options. Not sure if mastodon is technically plausible. Too bad about digg, stumbleupon, del.icio,us…
I share links on the happy mutant network from time to time, by pasting hyperlinks. It’s not instantaneous, but a little thoughtfulness goes a long way.
Sure BoingBoing needs exposure to the world. Watching anxiously to see what world eventually becomes reflected in Twitter.
The way things are going, tweeting too many links to boingboing might get your account banned anyway
BB has never been super political
I mean, Cory and Xeni were both political but it’s not like they usually agreed on anything
“Fascism is bad” should not be an edgy take
@orenwolf might want to consider blocking Twitter links from oneboxing here at the BBS
—just to break us all of the habit
I’m not sure directing eyeballs there is a good idea
Not right now.
We had this conversation regarding Facebook before. There is a difference between “this thing sucks and we’d like to stop supporting them” and the reality that a not-insignificant portion of news referral revenue comes from the big social sites. This has been discussed in a few posts now.
Risking BB’s continued existence to deny twitter some traffic is not a “win” - working hard to promote and integrate with alternatives so the news world (including BB) can free themselves from twitter is that win.
I can’t do that (yet) either. So much information about current events (think the invasion in Ukraine), especially non-news sources, is being shared by users on Twitter. It’s not a “bad habit”; it’s the reality of the issue above - Twitter is such a huge news source that I’d easily guess that half of the links posted here are from Twitter and don’t have accessible alternative sources yet. We don’t gain anything by turning the light off on war or independent folk that (currently) don’t have a better alternative to disseminating information widely.
The good news on this specific front is that as alternative sources pop up, nothing is stopping mutants from linking to those sources instead! So, encourage the folks you follow to use alternative platforms. Link to alternative sites when you see them, and encourage others to use those sites and sources as they become viable.
For now, BB has a presence and a bot in the Fediverse, and we will be early adopters of whatever is to come.
Wait…so if I join Mastadon…I can comment on boingboing store posts…over there.
This is the most convincing argument I have found yet for Mastadon
I believe that is true for literally any communication tool of choice other than this BBS though.
Well, maybe don’t use the EAS.
Well, yes, but the headlines will be there to comment on. Right now when I phone random people to editorialize on store posts they have no idea what I am talking about. Two of them did end up buying a grinder though
Thanks for following up!
As long as you guys are on it, I’m happy. And now I’m following you on Mastodon.
So, the events of the last few days have forced our hand here. Regardless of what I said above, it’s clear we can’t, in good conscience, continue to promote traffic over there.
Individual Authors, as always, make their own choices. But the social link is no more.
