I was never brave enough to get up on a skateboard; but I do love watching people having fun on their wheels.

Why would skateboarding need to be a sport for this to be cross training?
Lots of things people do for training aren’t sports and skating is much more physically demanding than it looks.

To participate, you don’t have to live in Arizona, the Valley of the Sun.
“The Valley of the Sun” refers to the Phoenix metropolitan area specifically, not the whole of Arizona. It includes Phoenix proper, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Glendale, Paradise Valley, and perhaps other regions I’d rather not think about.
