The gradations of light and dark shades is identical to figure painting techniques using fast-drying (therefore difficult to blend) acrylics (something I used to do — as a hobby —long ago). When done correctly, your brain does the blending.

Very cool. But wonder how much increases in contrast in photoshop and the fact that most people see it on high contrast high gamut backlit displays has to do with the effect
