The Russian President of the United States, Donny the Two Burgers only hires the best people.
Agreed, would that I had more than one like to give that comment!
My wife and I have had similar conversations; in particular about Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski. Mrs. F is incensed by the way the left pins its hopes on converting Collins and Murkowski to “no” votes on things like health care and SJC nominations. Her view is that it’s sexist to expect them to scuttle terrible, inhumane policies, simply because they are women; healthcare and food security and Roe are not “women’s issues”, they’re everybody issues. Expecting Collins and Murkowski to come in and save us is the same as writing off all the men in the Republican party as irredeemable and giving them a pass to continue acting like neanderthals.
Again, totally agree, but…
I have a 13 year old daughter. If her (certainly expurgated) reports of life on the front lines are any indication of the overall state of play, we still have a long way to go.
How deep do you think they do their own background checks? Presumably they focus mainly on career ideological issues, but presumably they also don’t want to be surprised by stuff like this. They’re not naive about the process. But there’s a limit to how much they’re going to be able to rummage for the proverbial skeletons in the closet.
A truly repentant Kavanaugh that publicly apologized to his victims could spark an interesting conversation in this country, especially in the light of #MeToo. But that ship has sailed since Kavanaugh categorically denied the first allegation within a couple days. So now he was likely a young sexual predator and is a middle-aged liar.
I wonder how things will be different 20-30 years from now, when people will be appointing those whose adolescence has been recorded, uploaded, and commented on contemporaneously? Unlike Kavenaugh, there will be gigabites of evidence instead of he said/she said.
Your wife has much more faith in the GOP than I do. Irredeemable is exactly how I would describe them.
Yeah, 12 yo girl/boy twins here. So far they’ve been exposed to a lot of great role models and active discussions about empathy and consent, but I’m not looking forward to some parts of the next few years. Just this past week there was a weird situation that I have to address with other parents. No foul intent, just the insidious nature of how boys communicate with girls. A real “teaching moment”. Related, but not; have you and your daughter seen “Eighth Grade”? I missed it’s run at our local theater, but every parent I spoke to told me I should watch it with them. A timely update for the social media generation and good opportunities for conversations. Sounds like you’re already communicating with her, which is really one of the biggest factors in empowerment. Kudos!
Yep. I have already done so as they all seem to be in lock step with this horrible administration. Even the ones who are bailing out. i.e. - Flake and Corker. But she is right, its a human issue, not just males or females.
I was thinking the other day…
It seems like the people most likely to make a joke about “…cleaning guns when the boy friend comes over…” are also the ones making the most excuses.
Cognitive dissonance is a hellofa thing.
#NotAllRapists
not responsible at high school age, not responsible at college age - you think he’s responsible at any age?
so if the dems don’t impeach (recall) his current court appointment after all this is said and done, I’ve lost complete respect for them - you CANNOT let this go even if they somehow defeat the supreme nomination (which now looks like the only way he is going to escape judgment)
kinda makes complete sense he doesn’t think other people in power like presidents should be held accountable
maybe ALL federal judges need re-review, imagine what has been missed
We haven’t seen it yet, but it’s on my list when it reaches cable.
We try to create opportunities for her to talk to us (hooray for long car rides to athletic events!) and that has worked pretty well so far, but I know what you mean about not looking forward to some parts of the next few years. I trust her to make (mostly) good choices, but adolescence sucks and there’s no way to come through it completely unscathed.
I’ll stop sidetracking the topic now. Cheers!
Well, with Franken there was a photo, with Kavanaugh there are only decades old stories which are a lot easier to dismiss. In fact I’m sure the more stories come out the GOP will just say that proves they’re all fake, like it’s all a plot manufactured by George Soros pulling his invisible puppet strings.
I don’t imagine that their excuse-making in a background check is any better that what’s happening in public.
#metoo has probably thrown all their cold calculations off: “Frat-boy stuff. That was 30 years ago, and no one will come forward now.” D’OH!
My 4am conspiracy theory was that the GOP found a bunch of women to make provably false claims in order to discredit the real ones.
SECONDED!
It’s fantastic, whether one has kids that age or not. So well done in so many ways – realistic, empathetic, funny, and so much more. Easily the best movie I’ve seen this year.
Yes, my typical conspiracy theory involves James O’Keefe appearing with one of his half-assed pranks.
Its a bit different with Collins. She’s buily her career on being one of the few pro choice Republicans. A decent size chunk of her funding comes from pro choice and womens health orgs. And she’s repeatedly make a big deal when challenged from the left of promising to never vote to confirm an anti-roe judge.
So the expectation isnt that she’ll save us cause she has lady parts, the expectation is that she’ll vote as she has traditionally voted on the key issue that’s kept her in office. And she’s making excuses about the clearly anti-roe Kavannah. Trying to make it plausible that she could believe he wouldn’t vote to kill it.
Her career is likely over after this. If she votes to confirm she loses a hell of a lot of funding and cross party support that’s propped her up. And will be challangable by a decent DNC candidate. If she votes against, the GOP will primary her and pigeon hole her.
GOP congress is still more worried about challenge from the right. I expect she’ll vote to confirm. Plus her terms not up till 2020, she seems to think she can keep her head down on this.
While I see your point, this is the kind of thing you need votes for. Even if they win control of the Senate after the midterms, they’re not going to have anywhere near the 2/3 majority required to successfully impeach him.
