For a long time now, I’ve viewed it as the departure of the B-ark, telephone sanitizers and all. Except I’d miss them less than the telephone sanitizers.
Kidding. Kinda.

Houston. You?
To be fair, I think it’s only certain Christian sects who go door to door–mainly Jehovah’s witnesses and the Mormon church. I don’t think most Christians, or other major religions do that.
Dang, Houston, we have a problem. You’re at Mission Control, I’m at JPL (Pasadena, CA).
Oh, well. If we ever have occasion to cross paths, I’ll buy you a drink.
That’s the point where I don’t understand the purpose of this… why gather around to mock people you disagree with by mimicking them? What’s the point of that? I feel like I have better things to do with my time than to specifically gather to take potshots at people who likely don’t give a shit to begin with and for little other reason than “because”.
Same here!
Right, most don’t. But so don’t most atheists, except perhaps the Dawkinists and people, who by way of their profession (usually science), get a lot of hate by fundamentalists.
Most atheists and agnostics do not feel the need to explicitedly tell people about their beliefs and view on Christianity and other religions, but reveal themselves as harmlessly as say the Christian who talks about the baptism of his child, the Jew who talks about the Rabbi who married him or a Leabian, who mentions her wife.
The one thing they sometimes do is making jokes, because, from their point ov view, believing in Jesus Christ or Mohammed is no different than believing in Thor or the Easter Bunny.
I would recommend Neighborhood Church. Great place.
Incidentally: It’s next door to Doc Brown’s house ;]
The more people are in a church, the better your chances of finding people “like you”, whatever that means: age, interest, etc.
I agree with you here. I think the sort of active proselytizing is in that way (going door to door, etc) is pretty rare.
I think you’ve misunderstood. I honestly don’t think the intent of any of these is to actively mock.
Rather, some of these groups have decided to borrow the singing and clapping that’s associated with churches because they would just like to sing and clap, without any need for God.
To others, the idea of singing and clapping outside of a church may seem like “making a mockery out of the way people in religious churches choose to celebrate their faith.”
Me, I’d be in the “feeling awkward” crowd, because I have no interest in singing and clapping to James Taylor. But I’m all into communities of interesting people, so I see this kind of thing as a step in the right direction.
I’m not sure which particular church they were from, but last December, two twenty-something men drove up to our house. This almost never happens, because we are in a rural area with a long driveway.
Dude #1 had a demeanor and accent of a low-budget mafia movie stereotype, with a shiny, too-small suit. Dude #2 didn’t get out of the car.
I went outside to see what they wanted. Dude #1 said “I’m here to invite you to Jesus-es birthday party”.
No thanks, was my reply, and I turned around and went inside. They left. It was weird, and I would have forgotten all about it except…
The next day, I was at a friend’s house in a nearby medium-size city, and two other dudes with a similar demeanor knocked on the door and said the exact same thing. “I’m here to invite you to Jesus-es birthday party.” It was even more weird.
Honestly, I’d rather talk to the Mormon boys or the old Jehovah’s Witness ladies. I’m not interested, but at least they’re not bizarre. And if some atheists stopped by, I probably wouldn’t go to their event (because I have hermit tendencies) but it would be nice to know there is a community of them in our little buckle of the bible belt. Something ought to balance out all the mega-churches and the non-mega-churches.
