Tourism minister Sandiaga Uno warned in August that an increase of 10% of existing tourists in South Bali would push it into the realm of overtourism. “We must avoid a situation like Barcelona, where tourists become public enemies.”
This month, Hermin Esti, a senior figure in the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime and Investment Affairs, revealedgovernment plans to place a moratorium on the construction of new motels, villas and nightclubs. The duration of such a moratorium is vague, though the minister running that department, Luhut Pandjaitan, suggests it may last a decade. As with such solutions minted in the department of peripheral visionaries, these are unlikely to arrest the resentment that has begun to bite. Tourists to Bali are destined to become public enemies.

Barcelona is an example to follow in matters of urbanism
Now
Barcelona is a cautionary tale about the dangers of overtourism.
I mean everything about the article is like… wrings hands
Starting from the photo, which exemplifies what I hate about tourists. The guy is wearing a yukata WRONG (I mean, unless he wants to look like a gangster), is on the road, blocking the traffic and clearly not paying attention to it, but the gaggle of girls in front of him. The message he’s projecting is that he clearly thinks he is more important than anyone else around. I want to caress him, in the face, WITH A CHAIR.
Then you go into the article and is like “oh yeah, and we started accepting inmigrants and reintegrating people who should be retired already, because someone has to take care of the shitty jobs our exploitative model of tourism needs”.
I would guess that the guy is an expat, a professional tour guide (among other dodgy hustles) and a self-proclaimed expert on Japanese culture who gaijin-splains the mysteries of Japanese society in fluent bullshit.
“This weekend” literally means, the weekend of posting, in other words, not so long after Milton.
The level of entitlement is ridiculous.
OMFG the level of mental gimnastics and obliviousness some people have.
“If i travel to a disaster zone can I expect to have it fully stocked pantries and fully staffed facilities, right? is not like these resources may be needed elsewhere today, or that they need to be any other place, right? I paid a lot of money to be here today!”
Disney vacations are not cheap, and some families save for years or go into debt in order to visit. It’s a magical trip that parents love doing with their kids.
A pilgrimage to a holy shrine, in other words.
The Canary Islands join Barcelona and Mallorca on Tourist protests.
Hi guys, as I won’t be moving to substack and I don’t have any main post at my name (but seems I am mostly known for this one) just wanted to say this BBS has been my safe harbor for the last four years and I will miss you very much.
With lots of love:
I don’t post much on Mastadon, but I’m lurking there as much as anywhere else.
