This was the mistake in prosecuting the occupiers of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge
They charged the leaders with things they couldn’t prove and only got to convict the minions of anything

IMHO, doubled penalties are the least of our concerns-- and Biden is against the death penalty anyway.
Perhaps if the law was carefully worded to apply only to weirdos who storm the capitol with guns, and not to ordinary demonstrators (Antifa, Code Pink, BLM, and, yes, their right wing equivalents).

i also wish for the heavy penalties as an example, but as @jerwin say it always rolls down hill. best for actual criminal justice would be short consistent penalties.
the travesties come when people are rotting in jail for believing they were eligible to vote, while rich whites get plea deals or early release ( bc somehow rich white people in prison are more susceptible to covid than any other group apparently )
i dont believe in long prison sentences really almost at all. these guys will only become even more radical nazis for the duration.
i guess i do think though they should have to take the same citizenship courses and tests immigrants do. and a metric ton of bias and anti racism programs. god knows they need it

Kevin Strong, a California resident who was already under investigation by the FBI when he stormed the Capitol, is facing several charges after admitting to participating in the insurrection and taking a selfie in front of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, according to a criminal complaint.
A week prior to the riots, a witness told the FBI that Strong believed in “Q clearance” and had declared that World War II was going to occur on Jan. 6. The witness added that Strong had a “WW1WGA” flag—representing the popular QAnon slogan “where we go one, we go all”—at his house and had stated he believed the conspiracy theory was going to cover the cost of a truck he had recently bought.
Does QAnon have a mortgage plan? WWII, is that a typo, or spoilers? And if the FBI was interviewing people a week before the insurrection, what was happening further up the ladder, or rather, not happening?

They’re still trying to sneak guns past the House metal detectors instead of running to a country with no extradition.
In charging papers, the FBI said that during the Capitol riot, Caldwell received Facebook messages from unspecified senders updating him of the location of lawmakers. When he posted a one-word message, “Inside,” he received exhortations and directions describing tunnels, doors and hallways, the FBI said.
Some messages, according to the FBI, included, “Tom all legislators are down in the Tunnels 3floors down,” and “Go through back house chamber doors facing N left down hallway down steps.” Another message read: “All members are in the tunnels under capital seal them in. Turn on gas,” the FBI added.
“Unspecified” is not the same as “unknown.”
