At this point I think he’s just arguing in bad faith.

It was racist then. People complained about it all the time. It’s not a “new thing” for me, it’s been something I’ve been yelling about since I was a kid, looked at the box, and went “Holy shit, that’s racist. How can they just sell things with racism encoded in them like that? There’s NO WAY that’d fly if it were a Jewish character holding gold coins or something… but a slave lady nanny’s okay?”

Reminder: this is the origin of the brand mascot.

jemima

And here’s a fun paper mask made to promote the brand, so your kids could literally use blackface as part of a healthy breakfast:

Internet outrage is not what made Aunt Jemima racist.

Ah, so it stuck around after all! Last I had heard, Stubb’s sold the sauce/spice business to McCormick, who turned around & sent the restaurant/music venue a cease & desist.

Seriously, though:

I won’t miss it, but then again I moved overseas, abandoned fake maple syrup and only use the real thing. I am a snob and therefore disqualified.

Stubb’s has been mentioned, and I think that may be the way the conglomerates go: find some popular restaurant, license the name and likeness, get the mix rubber stamped by the namesake. And then the namesake gets mud slung by the conglomerate’s competitors and its patsies, so the conglomerate moves on to the next “artisan” cachet brand.

We’ve got that one in Australia. I will keep an eye on it, see if it goes away.

Best.

I was surprised to find Darlie toothpaste in my in-laws bathroom in Malaysia.

Now there is news around that Colgate may change the brand again, after decades of trying to make it less racist.

In Spain they still have Conguitos, chocolate-covered peanuts. It’s naming and production started in 1961, when Spain still had a cocoa-producing colony in equatorial Africa. Pretty offensive, including the cannibalistic connotations.

It took them a little while to get there. Thank Benjamin Lay for making a damn nuisance of himself.

US Quakers didn’t ban slaveowning until 1776. They could have moved sooner.

Spain. That figures. Google “Spanish Grand Prix” with 6-time Formula One champion, Lewis Hamilton who is Black.
