Enjoy a nice warm glass of Dr. Pepper

Hadn’t seen that one…

My Stubb’s story: when they opened the restaurant on Red River St. in Austin*, I worked downtown and would walk over for lunch. Someone working there would check up on me after I had my food; I guess she had some connection/relation to Stubblefield but I never figured out who she was (but didn’t want to ask, lest I come off as a greenhorn). Anyway as often as not, she’d bring me some dessert, gratis. One afternoon there was a younger woman working alongside her. The younger woman approached my table and asked “what did you say to my mom?!” I assumed there’d been some misunderstanding, that I’d said something rude etc. Before I could stammer out an explanation (not even knowing what I’d done), she dropped the other shoe: “she loves you to death!”

*My understanding is that Stubb’s sold their bottled sauce business to McCormick, who turned around and sent them a cease-and-desist for continuing to run the restaurant under the name “Stubb’s.” The restaurant (re)christened itself Liberty Lunch, which had shut down around the turn of the millennium. I can’t hate on McCormick’s too much as they’re (sort of) local, and they make Old Bay.
