Sure, but my point isn’t whether or not it’s desirable, it’s that the article adopts this “gee whiz, we thought it was something we’d only see in the sci-fi future but look, we’re here now!” congratulatory tone when the millions of people it’s referring to were thinking about something entirely different than current-day “AI”. Whether or not sentient AI is something we should create, we’re nowhere near being able to create it. They thought it was too sci-fi to be possible in their lifetime and they were right.
