Well fuck, whoever makes it through this is set for when global warming raises the ocean levels and we end up with malaria mosquitoes in places we didn’t have them before eh?
“I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it. Every one of these doctors said, “How do you know so much about this?” Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for President.”
Yes, he said that; while visiting the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and talking to actual doctors.
While I know some don’t like Huffpost, I thought I’d copy this here anyway. You guys were right all along.
Also:
Because as has been confirmed today, he owns stock in the company that produces it.
If hydroxychloroquine becomes an accepted treatment, several pharmaceutical companies stand to profit, including shareholders and senior executives with connections to the president. Mr. Trump himself has a small personal financial interest in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine.
It’s plausible he doesn’t even realize he owns this stock and he’s doubling down on the hyrdoxychloroquine thing for purely ego-driven reasons because he thinks he knows better than the doctors.
But that’s why we have a 200+ year tradition of Presidents divesting themselves of their private business interests when they take office: so we don’t have to wonder whether the decisions they make in office are driven by personal profit motives.
I have been thinking a lot on the zithromax, paired with the other as he’s recommending. In saying “what do you have to lose,” apart from dying from the hydroxychloroquine, the entire nation could lose a weapon in the antibiotic arsenal through over-prescription and the potential for resistance. I don’t believe he knows the difference or that antibiotics do not kill viruses. I wish someone would ask this at a press conference in such a way that this lack of understanding comes to light. That may then help end/forestall the “I know as much as a doctor” trip.
Eh. They’re calculating Trump’s stake as somewhere between $100 and $1500, and it’s through his family trusts being invested in funds that in turn own shares of Sanofi. There’s a connection, but calling it “a stake” is technically correct but also, IMO, extremely misleading. That wouldn’t be a serious stake for me, and I’m not even a single-digit millionaire; for Trump, it’s a rounding error. (Even if he isn’t a real billionaire, which is quite likely.) Especially since hydroxychloroquine is a patent-free medicine and is manufactured by companies other than Sanofi, too.
So yeah, I’m sticking with my earlier position: this isn’t Trump grifting, this is Trump having convinced himself that hydroxychloroquine is a miracle drug that will make the pandemic go away, so the economy will bounce and he will be re-elected, and now pushing it to everyone he talks to.
I’d be willing to bet one of his big donors has a large stake in one of the pharmas, and mentioned this drug to him.
he’s grifting out of habit, shilling and scamming as a conditioned reflex, even if there is no benefit to him
Now that I could believe!
