I’m not sure why, but apparently the current queen needs to stay with the original hive and a brand new queen can be introduced to the ‘new’ hive.
Pheremones. If the new queen is plonked into the new split right away it will be killed by the workers because it doesnt smell right. The new bee is kept in a little box, sealed with sugar, tucked into the new split. The workers in the new split (actually nurse bees because you transfer brood comb and nurse bees in a split) take a few days to eat through the sugar by which time they are accustomed to the new queen’s smell.
