I was trying to explain to my granddaughter today that there’s a set of circumstances that will mess up any ship out there. The trick is not coming across it.

Right. Of course, the more seaworthy your ship, the better your chances of getting out of its way when you do come across it. Whatever it is.

I was describing the Severn bore to her, and we got sidetracked into nautical disasters and naval engineering. 
Having a seven year old around to chat shit with again is the greatest blessing I’ve found in this whole ‘getting old’ thing. God, I love her.
