Then you probably know the term black hole is only 48 years old and the possibility that Cygnus X-1 might be a black hole is only around 45 years old which was around the time Hawkings posited the modern theory of black holes. The idea that something so massive not even light can escape can exist is over 232 years old. As recently as 2014, the man who gave us the modern black hole theory stated that there are no black holes. So I suppose that counts as a debate.

I think you are misinterpreting Hawkings’ 2014 paper.

You are probably right. That’s not my wheelhouse. Perhaps he was saying that our conception of black holes is not correct.
“there are no black holes” -Stephen Hawking 2014

From a quick reading of this article over at Nature, it sounds more like he’s saying that there are no event horizons. But I’m not clever enough to figure out how that translates into “there are no black holes”, as the article continues to go on to describe black holes without event horizons, calling them “black holes” the whole time.

So you trust those scholars, in an appeal to authority that you are making to me, that it was a common belief in the Middle Ages? But not scholars on whether pyramids were used for burial?

Yeah, normally Republican candidates are fine with only taking on one or two Mediæval views to appeal to Republican voters, but Carson seems to be loading up on them. I keep expecting him to talk about how he was such a successful surgeon because he really knows how to balance people’s humors…

This is all redundant anyway. Everyone knows that pyramids were built to slow down time.

‘Land of the Slime Dinosaurs’ would be a great B movie, crackpot science notwithstanding.
