Bill Cosby made a joke about his rape accusations during stand-up routine

Done! As you have been told, right now there are over thirty corroborating witnesses on one side, and not even a definite statement on the other. As you have been told, if you pretend that wouldn’t be more than enough to convict anyone but a celebrity for any other crime, you are lying to yourself.

And that’s for the elevated standards of punishing someone in a court of law, which as you have been told, is sadly not happening here. So your argument is wrong on so many different levels, it would be better on the “fun with infinity” thread.

A jury trial is not a synechdoche for everyday life.

The standard (in a civil suit) is preponderance of the evidence, and the burden still lies with the accuser.

Perjury trials then (that’s still a criminal matter, right?) You get the idea.

Dead on. I think he’s currently the darling of those who feel the old social order is being swept aside and replaced by a newer more progressive one. It is always being swept aside and replaced, often by a newer more progressive one, always has been of course.

There’s a cult of overreaction to the most extreme and hilarious members of the feminist movement, often straw women or actual women accused saying things they never actually said. (All sex is rape, everything is rape, the patriarchy is so evil and oppressive that you, I and all men are guilty by proxy and for the sin of having a Y chromosome etc.)

Those guys, and the women who support them love a fight like this, they can take comfort in the idea that all these ‘promiscuous heathen’ women are lying and seeking to profit from these accusations. Given his celebrity status, and the likelihood he’s had contact and likely sex, with at least one seriously damaged lost soul of a woman, I won’t be surprised if one of the accusers turns out to be lying, or a liar comes forth at some point. Though I think we should probably feel sorry for her rather than attack her when that happens.

None of that changes the fact that it seems almost certain he’s been doing this, THIRTY human beings have accused him of raping them. What exactly is the chance they are all lying? This dates back for years, and while his lawyers deny it, and I have no direct knowledge of any of this.

If the man had sex with far more than thirty women, most of whom were clearly being simply used and taken advantage of by his position of power in their lives, shouldn’t that alone be enough to label him a monster?

The false accusations of rape I am aware of in my actual life are all tragic lies to cover up some horrible behavior on the part of the accuser, in the case where the accused is named he was involved in that behavior, although not in a sexual assault (Theft and adultery, she didn’t want to get caught, also he was apparently ‘cheating’ on her with another woman he wasn’t married to either.)
Or because the woman had gotten pregnant outside of her marriage. (Twice, no actual rapist was named, but it happened to her twice, she’s either the unluckiest person alive or these are two more lies, since the poor girl is a pathological liar, and nearly continuously unfaithful to her husband, the idea she’s lying seems sadly plausible,)

I think those two cases are probably typical of false accusations of rape. How on earth would the man have time to get tangled up thirty such situations? If he’s even sane at all how could he have spent so much time with thirty women who were so awful they would accuse him of raping them?

Falsely accused once? Unlikely in real life, but for a huge celebrity who knows thousands of people and is known by millions? Possible, twice? Well, less likely but the second might just be seeking to piggyback on the first. Three times stretches belief, especially since he was once a beloved public figure, this isn’t a man who bragged about his sexual conquests and lived a rock star life, in the public’s mind at least he wasn’t.

Thirty times? More likely a meteorite will strike nearby and the blast wave will deliver not one, but two winning lottery tickets softly and safely to my front porch between now and the time I’m done with this post.

Unfortunately, once a man has been convicted of rape, there is zero chance that some would think it wasn’t her fault.

Don’t think I don’t not hate not using double negatives, because I… do… not…?

Instead of one-on-trials, perhaps a class-action lawsuit is more in order.

This was meant to be Cosby’s comeback year. Anniversary specials, maybe a network sitcom, etc etc, Now either someone didn’t want that to happen, (his social views peg him as a stick in the mud, in some circles), or his non consenting partners over the years decided “now or never”-- I won’t be ignored. As for him being involved with so many women that thirty of them can take exception, promiscuity is not a sin. Once upon a time, AIDS was not a concern…

The splash of publicity used to announce his comeback year was likely a trigger for many of these women. They probably did the best they could to put it out of their minds, but then all of a sudden his face is everywhere.

What the heck does this have to do with Cosby’s promiscuity? Lots of rich and famous people sleep around, but almost none of them are the subjects of dozens of credible rape accusations.

It’s also worth remembering that many of these accusations have been around for years and years. At least a dozen women were ready to testify against Cosby during a civil trial in 2006 but the parties settled that lawsuit out of court.

Edit—Here’s a timeline detailing many of the charges. None of the allegations surrounding Cosby are really that “new” or different than what various women have been publicly saying about him for over a decade, it’s just that the mainstream media only recently started paying attention.

Many of the more recent women coming forward were probably emboldened by the turning public perception of Cosby since they may have (rightly) assumed that their stories would have been dismissed by the public if they’d spoken out against him when he was still “America’s Favorite Dad.”

There is a name for that. And yes, vengence always feels right.

Don’t return barbarism because you think maybe you saw it in someone else.

But could you still look down on Cosby once you too had climbed down into the muck?

Fuck you for assuming that THIRTY WOMEN are lying.

Thank you. @SeymourStein as a survivor myself: That shit is not helpful. And it’s not up to you to be outraged in that matter. Even I’m not outraged in that matter, and I’ve been violated. So stop it. Listen to the victims, speak out against rape, BELIEVE victims when they come forward – but don’t threaten violence. It’s not okay. It won’t help.

Don’t assume I am not a survivor also, thank you very much. And I for one would jump at the chance for some vengeance. It would be helpful for me. So not everything is about you or your perception as to how to resolve things

You are more than welcome to your personal feelings, but you’ll just end up in prison. That’s not helping. I understand your anger, but it’s not healthy and it’s not okay. It would not be helpful for you, no matter how much you think it might. More violence is NOT the answer.

Even if you make a set of assumptions that makes it more than likely that a person accused by a single accuser is innocent, the chances they are innocent as the number of accusers goes up goes to zero incredibly quickly. 30 accusers is right out. People saying that someone raped them is evidence that they were raped. It isn’t proof, but it is evidence. 30 such pieces of evidence is better proof than DNA on a murder weapon.

Anyone who defends Cosby at this point must argue it is a conspiracy against him. There is no other possible explanation for his innocence.

AMEN (in an atheist kind of way). As a survivor of rape (or a victim- I don’t mind that term, even though I know some don’t prefer it), I would never wish violence on my assaulter. Nothing angers me more than clueless people hoping that rapists themselves get raped in prison. I mean, what the hell does that complish? “Rape sucks, so let’s hope for more rape!”

Really!
You say that like you have proof that he did it. Something you’d like to share with the class?
