Red sky all day, sailors stay inside and get drunk? I bet it rhymes in Cantonese.

Any natural phenomenon that people interpret as a portent of doom.

Do not be alarmed citizens! In an actual emergency fire and brimstone will fall from the sky. Do not be alarmed. Keep calm and carry on.

My, what a creative explanation. Did anyone get stats on how many fell for it?

I’ve only ever seen a sky get a dark red when there were massive forest fires in BC, Canada and they winds were blowing the smoke over south east Alaska. We had a few weeks of orange/red skies and the faint smell of wood smoke.

My experience

I lived close to the auction that was the initial superspreader event.

Orange skies, and I had to wash my hair several times a day to keep the smell of burning farm animals out of my hair. They did not smell of beef and lamb.
