Bizarre soundtrack glitch in Russia's surreal New Year special on state TV

Absolutely - it clearly uses the classic ‘fresh’ sample, as well as record spin down and record scratch (Yup, that’s me) stock sound effects.

Russia is a load bearing structure; and yet it is having trouble supporting Putin’s ambitions.

This seriously reminds me of something from Tim & Eric’s Awesome Show.

@anon15383236 Exactly! It was also applaud like your life depends on it.

State-sanctioned entertainment in totalitarian regimes has always come off as waking nightmares for the truly captive segments of the audience, but I expect even much more so for the unfortunate career entertainers – artists (freedom-loving almost by definition) – who are corralled in and forced not only to eat shit… but smile while doing so. Poor fucking bastards.

… a record scratch is not an audio glitch?

Yes! I was about to post exactly that. These are the decadent folks of the Capitol, living it up while being ever mindful of falling out of favour.

But now I have nothing left to say…

Not when it is intentionally part of the show. The scratch was done on purpose as the singers were standing on a projected vinyl record.

All that bow image brings to mind to those watching from the outside is “Russian warship, go f*ck yourself!”. The same can be said for this cringeworthy fascist spectacle.

(The deck chair also brings to mind the Titanic.)

I thought that the nautical theme might be a little counterproductive.

For all their expertise at propaganda, fascist cultural authorities are usually tone deaf when it comes to attempts to entertain.

This TV special is an almost textbook example of the Russian concept of poshlost’.
