Black bear casually sits with family and enjoys a picnic lunch

Could it be that this is fake? They seem very relaxed for a lunch with a deadly animal; their attention is directed away from the bear (would you dare take your eyes off it?); someone is filming from a high angle for some reason; the bear’s face is obscured for a lot of the time, including while he tries to pat it. Perhaps it was a dog in the original? Or maybe they’re just nuts and random bears have table manners somehow, and don’t steal the food off your plate or put their elbows on the table…

How do you do, fellow humans?

While this is a very bad idea for reasons stated above, I wouldn’t say it’s unbelievably dangerous for the humans. According to bear.org a total of 61 people have been killed by black bears in North America in the last 120 years, mostly in Alaska and Canada. Compare that to dog attacks which kill nearly that many people every year.

Unless we’re planning on domesticating bears a-la canines, this was not a well thought out plan.

Yeah but there are an estimated 600,000 black bears in all of North America and most of those never come into close proximity with humans. There are something like 100 times that many dogs and almost all of those are in close proximity with humans every single day.

The video description says the bear hangs around the cabin often, and the owners are used to it. It responds to gestures / commands. There’s another video where they make the bear a peanut butter sandwich, and it waits patiently for it. Dangerous and stupid behavior? Yes. Adorable? Yes.

Reminds me of the wolf Romeo who played around with local dogs and was generally friendly. Unfortunately, it only takes one asshole with a gun.

The chrome-dome guy with the headband and swim trunks is a dead giveaway that these people are going to be idiots.
