I haven’t been in Italy in 30 years, but my understanding was that even as a compliment, “figa” has a sexual connotation along the lines of “hottie,” but is generally more vulgar, like “cool fuckable chick.”

It can be, and if it’s used to talk about a woman even as a compliment, it almost always is… but “che figata” just means that’s awesome, or figa when talking about something that isn’t a human female. But as soon as it’s in reference to a person it is most definitely sexist commentary.
