None of that changes the fact that the movement was indeed racist and homophobic. Historians who study the history of disco have shown this to be the case. Thems just the facts.

Phrases used by hate groups always are. They aren’t a creative bunch. They co-opt symbols for their own uses. That doesn’t change the fact that once those symbols acquire that new meaning, it’s best to stop using them (and saying them).
Nobody cares anymore that Nazis lifted the swastika from indigenous cultures. If you use one now, you’re a Nazi.
Yes, it’s stupid that (at least for a while) we can no longer use the OK hand symbol, draw cartoon frogs, or sport a high fade haircut. However fighting against that and trying to use those symbols anyway, ignoring the larger cultural context of them, is futile and disrespectful to those being hurt.
