Sorry for harping on about the Erasmus thing but I think it’s the perfect illustration of how the British government is thinking in jingoistic symbols rather than reality. It’s an unambiguously positive program, probably the EU’s greatest success but staying in it would mean acknowledging that there is something positive about engaging with the rest of Europe
The ersatz program they have developed is only for university students, once again putting the working classes at a disadvantage. And now it has turned out that the reason NI residents are still able to take part in Erasmus+ is because the Irish government is paying for them. Magnanimous of them, of course, but it won’t go unnoticed that the UK government isn’t willing to do that or that they didn’t allow Scotland to stay in as well, as they had requested.
ETA: taking bets now that the Turing scheme grants will turn out to be loans in the end
