All your points are well taken. But I cannot toss out all my compassion just because what she did was offensive. I want to think that she learned a big lesson here. I have made made mistakes like that and have learned from them changing my thinking and behavior.
I haven’t seen any response from her one way or the other. But I would like to think that just cause she made a bad choice. A really bad one. doesnt mean she didnt have an oh fuck I am so sorry moment.
I used to drive truck in Seattle. I was at the loading dock at a grocery store. There was a produce company called Petersons. And I said petersons like the little kid in Green Beret who Petersahn. I meant nothing by it it was just mimicking a kid with an accent. The asian produce guy got pissed and rightly so. I felt horrible. The next time I came in I apologized to the guy and had since then changed my behavior.
I would like to think this woman had roughly the same sort of epiphany.
Is it, though? Jurisdictions vary, so I can’t speak to the legality of filming in this location in California in this instance.
I personally doubt this is the case. Filming a public servant performing their duties is rarely illegal. Filming and publishing identifying pictures of minors without consent is more likely to be illegal.
But if the school wants to make a sacrifice to Saint Streisand, they should by all means file a criminal complaint against the student. Definitely shine a little disinfecting sunlight on that school.
WAIT… Racist behaviour shouldn’t be called out if it was perhaps illegally recorded? You are right, shame on this native American girl for outing someone who is demeaning native Americans!
Why not have compassion for the kid who filmed her? Who was the one who had to see their culture mocked and belittled by their teacher?
That’s good, but what about the people you hurt?
Maybe so, but again, what about the CHILD? At what point do we acknowledge that white people making “mistakes” like this is causing others actual trauma and focus on the one who was actually traumatized?
That’s good. But the person offended was also under no obligation to accept your apology.
For the planets I learned: Mary’s Violet Eyes Made John Stay Up Nights Pining. Sweet simple and effective unless you don’t know what it means to pine for someone.
Disagree. There are better ways to communicate information without choosing to ridicule a people’s culture. Plenty of others here learned SOHCAHTOA without this spectacle.
Would you be cool with this teacher using antisemetic iconography to teach kindergartners about stars and triangles?
If you mean sohcahtoa, I doubt it. She was so distracting in her manic, overt, racist display that several of the kids probably never even heard what she was trying to teach them because their minds were being blown with a “WTF, this is an adult?!?” sensation.
Way, way more effective ways to nurture learning than this sorry display.
Holy crap. This is the difference between Canada and the US right here. We learned the SOH CAH TOA mnemonic as well, but it was never taught as some sort of First Nations… whatever that is. It’s just a catchy mnemonic, nothing else. That poster is horrifying.
Well, obviously that’s not the entirety of the lessons. It’s a tiny part of how trig is taught in many places. It’s a very handy mnemonic for remembering the trig relationships to each side of the right triangle that I use to this day.
Protip: Don’t start your relationship with a new community with the dumbest concern trolley in history. Welcome to BoingBoing!
