The robber probably found it nearly impossible to fence and threw it out in the least traceable way he could imagine. If he hadn’t already been caught it’s doubtful it could ever be linked to him unless he left the McDonald’s receipt in the bag or something.

That was my thought as well. He may have even been smart enough to know there’s no way you could sell it because it’s so easy to know who it belongs to and that it is stolen. He may have ditched it immediately after the theft, or had a friend do it after he was arrested to lessen the charges.
